These guys bring sharp cheeky tongue-in-cheek hip hop from the UK. The duo feature poet/rapper/lyricist Scroobius Pip (David Meads) and producer Dan Le Sac (Dan Stephens). Their music has a electronic/electro sound (Mmmm one my favorite kinds of hip hop) and gets very crunchy at times.
I’ve very much enjoyed their debut Angels album from earlier this year and I’ve been waiting to see these guys live ever since I got my hands on it. They are playing here twice on this tour. Firstly there is a late night gig in the Paradso as part of the Noodlanding. The next night they play the Ekko in Utrecht. Despite the fact that I can walk to the Paradiso in a much less time that it takes me to even get to central station I will probably go to the Ekko gig as I have found the Noodlanding gigs to be inconsistent in the past. The Ekko venue is more intimate and you can also drink decent (Belgian) beer which is unlike the swill they serve up in the Paradiso.
The album got mixed reviews, especially in the US and the more established media. With lyrics like “You shall not buy the NME” it is not surprising that they have alienated certain journalists. These guys seriously take the p**s out of mainstream rap music and anything else that happens to pop up on their radar. So if you like this kind of humor this gig is for you, and if not you can always go see some of the plentiful NME type bands that play gig here.
I’m not sure if the Amsterdam gig will sell out but due to the smaller venue size at Ekko you should get a ticket for the Utrecht gig soon if you want avoid disappointment.
