Unfortunately this gig has been canceled. Hopefully he will come back again soon.
Flying Lotus produced one of my favorite albums of 2008 (Los Angeles) and has been vibrating my speakers for most of the summer. His music skips across many boundaries but if I was to try and classify it I would describe it as ambient hip-hop electronica, the sound is organic and the percussion can be both loping and tribal. As one would expect he is signed to Warp records and I found it interesting to find out that his great aunt is Alice Coltrane.
This gig will sell out for sure so buy some tickets now if you want to get to see him. (there are already 65 people attending this on the Last.fm event). He actually played in the Bimhuis this summer on the Beat Dimensions night. This gig I could not attend which was painful as that venue is awesome.
If you are already familiar with his work don’t expect his live gigs to be the same as his laid back recordings. He turns up the party when he plays live and you can expect a heavy percussive sound from his Ableton Live backed DJ set. I did not have any luck finding an official video off of the new album but I did find these video’s that will give you an idea of what to expect.
When: Saturday November 29
