Until this year Mercury Rev had released six studio albums but last month they have topped it all off by releasing two new albums at the same time. I first heard Mercury Rev when a flatmate ran excitedly into the room clutching a copy of “Yerself Is Steam” and we all crowded around the turntable to get a listen to this fresh new band. The earlier albums are wildly experimental and over the years they have evolved into a more melodic sound.

The new Strange Attractor album is available as a free MP3 download from their web site. This album is a lush swell of electronic cinematic sounds and has given them a chance to break the mold of the more ballad driven albums of late. I’ve not heard the other album yet but the reviews are good. This band are great live and they can give the kind of performances that make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
