We’ve mentioned these guys when they came through town last year. They are back and what’s more they have a new album that was released just last week. Its a dub reworking of The Beatles’ classic 1967 Sgt. Pepper album.

The Easy Star All Stars are a dub reggae band from New York. Their first album, which was top of my playlist for quite some time, is made up of dub reworks of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album. I really dig this album as I am a big dub fan and also like the pre Rodger Waters Pink Floyd material. The album is very tight and cleverly put together and as well as being one hour of pure fun. Their second album featured covers of the Radiohead “OK Computer” album and also features some great tracks. They released an excellent EP last year titled “Until That Day” that features original material from the band that has featured heavily on my playlist.

Their new album of Beatles reworks features a host of collaboration from reggae greats including among them Steel Pulse, U Roy, Frankie Paul, Max Romeo and The Mighty Diamonds. Once again they have worked their production magic on this one with some outstanding upbeat tracks some of which go off on a completely different tangent to the originals. Lyrics like “Woke up, got out of bed and ran my fingers through my dreads” should give you a clue as to where they have gone with some of them.

These guys are one of the worlds best dub reggae acts and play at top festivals. They normally feature at much larger venues in other countries but you can get to see them play in the intimate Kleine Zaal of the Paradiso. It will be summertime so treat yourself to some sweet summer reggae. As they say on Masterchef, it does not get much better than this!
