Jóhann Jóhannsson is a composer and producer from Reykjavík in Iceland and makes neo-classical ambient music that is evocative of icy Scandinavian landscapes. His 2006 album ‘IBM 1401 - A Users Manual’ featured heavily on my playlist and is one of the most interesting ambient albums that I have heard in some time. It was recorded with a sixty-piece string orchestra and the music is hauntingly beautiful. His latest album “Fordlândia” was hailed to be even better by the critics.

He does a lot of work on film scores and this influence is very much present in his latest albums. His music sits more on the classical side of the fence than electronica. He is in the the same territory as Philip Glass and Max Richter but I can also detect elements of sounds from the likes of Global Communications and Harold Budd in his soundscapes. He is currently touring with a six piece ensemble. Expect a night where you are cocooned in waves of ethereal sonic beauty as you are elevated through space, time and other worlds.
