Mulatu Astatke & the Heliocentrics
We very much enjoyed the Mulatu Astatke gig at the Paradiso last weekend. He is well matched with his backing band the Heliocentrics and together they treated us to some of his old classics and new material. The new material is very good but the old classic tracks are great and were much appreciated by the audience.
Unfortunately the gig was a bit spoiled by some members of crowd. The music at times can be very quiet, especially when he is playing the vibraphone, and with all the talking and shouting going on in the venue it was just not possible to hear him play. Maybe next the time they come back they will play the Bimhuis?
