Nomo are an 8 piece afro beat/funk band from the Detroit area of the US. There is something deeply infectious about the music that they make. Creating their own instruments gives them a sound like I have not heard before in any other band. Old fire extinguishers are used for percussing, they play conch shells and custom made electric kalimbas.
Their music is a blaze of horns, percussion and funk. Leader Elliot Bergman describes it as a “transcendent, elemental sound-one that moves both bodies and spirits”. The influence of Fela Kuti is very much present but there is something else here, a machine like percussive sound that brings it closer to contemporary dance music but with a wall of horns that keep it in the soul vibe. There are all kinds of other influences in the sound, from Sun Ra & Miles Davis to Brian Eno & Talking Heads.
