Broken Bells - The High Road

Broken Bells is a collaboration between James Mercer of The Shins and Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton of Gnarls Barkley and DANGERDOOM who has produced artists like Beck, Gorillaz, The Rapture and The Black Keys. This year they have released their self titled debut album to much critical acclaim.

So what do they sound like you may ask? Well many things, and it’s firmly grounded in the 80s. On some tracks is the swirling Madchester sound of acts like the The Stone Roses; catchy choruses but combined with some blippy electronic sounds and funky beats. On other tracks there are lush orchestral sounds and jazzy trumpets. The album has benefited from a hip-hop production aesthetic.

Playing with a 5 piece backing band their live shows are laid back and atmospheric. With only one album release behind them you can expect some cover versions. On their current tour they have been doing tracks from artists like Neil Young to my My Bloody Valentine and if we are lucky they even play the track from the excellent Danger Mouse-Sparklehorse album Dark Night of the Soul (a collaboration with the sadly deceased Mark Linkous & David Lynch).
