Flying Lotus is a producer from Los Angeles. He produced one of my favorite albums of 2008 (Los Angeles) and his excellent EP ‘Shhh!’ has been vibrating my speakers a lot recently. He unfortunately had to cancel his world tour last year but now he is on the road again and this time when he comes to Amsterdam he is set to play in Trouw as part of the Viral Radio night with Samiyam, the Gaslamp Killer, Juha and Cinnaman.
His music skips across many boundaries and goes from hip hop to electronica into twisted beats and dubstep so as one would expect he is signed to Warp records. The sound is organic and the percussion can be both loping and tribal. He comes from a Jazz family as his great aunt is Alice Coltrane.
If you are already familiar with his work don’t expect his live gigs to be the same as his laid back recordings. He turns up the party when he plays live and you can expect a heavy percussive sound.
I did not have any luck finding an official video off of the latest album but I did find these videos that will give you an idea of what to expect.
