Flying Lotus live

The Brainfeeder & Viral Radio party went off like a bomb at Trouw on Friday night. The Gaslamp Killer gave us a blistering Serato DJ set. The man was a manic ball of energy reminiscent of the Tasmanian devil from the Looney Tunes cartoons. He rushed about with such a verbent energy that I though that at any second he was going to jump into the crowd and run screaming out of the building. With the pace and aggression he dropped into his set of big up dubstep party tunes he really should have played after Flying Lotus. When he played Aphex Twin’s “Come to Daddy” the crowd went totally wild! However this resulted in the energy flow of the night being unbalanced as Flying Lotus tracks are by their nature a bit more down tempo.

So the crowd was (too) much warmed up by the time Flying Lotus took to the stage. He played a great live Abelton set. He gave us the tribal energy of “Melt!” that had the crowd in its mesmerising power. He brought the funk to the floor when he dropped Stunt$ from his Shhh! EP as he careered around like a man possessed by the spirit of a mad scientist. Later in the set he beat out a dirty rhythm of live beats on his drum controller pads. Flying Lotus has a beautiful organic sound and he enthralled the audience with his sonic tastes and textures.
