The Todays Art festival in Den Haag is a 2 day event that brings together sound installations, performances, art, cinema and music.

There’s so much going on at this well curated festival that it took me hours to go through the program in detail. These are my top picks from the music but there will be great art installations, films and performances that we do not cover here on amsterdam-jam.

Ólafur Arnalds
(Saturday 22:30 - 23:30 - Atrium City Hall Section B - Xclusive)

Ólafur Arnalds brings us his beautiful neo-classical music from Iceland. With just a few releases under his belt this young composer already has much critical acclaim. His music, not surprisingly, very much reminds me of the other excellent neo-classical Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson and there are also elements of Max Richter & Sylvain Chauveau. There’s a lot of buzz on Twitter about this concert and I would expect that it will sell out so you should secure yourself some tickets in advance if you do not want to be disappointed.
OK I have to admit that I like his videos so much that I had to post two of them.

X-102 (Jeff Mills & Mike Banks) [US] - Rediscovers the Rings of Saturn
(Friday - Atrium Section B - Xclusive : 22:30-23:45)

X-102 is a collaboration between Detroit techno legends Jeff Mills and Mike Banks. This unique performance will be a live audio video journey exploring the Rings of Saturn.

Actress
(Friday - Paard van Troje Small Hall : 00:00-01:00)
Actress release his debut album “Splazsh” this year bringing his post-dubstep bass music to the world. Its difficult to classify his music as it sits in so many diverse sub genres from ambient techno to wonky. His music is abstract, experimental and at times sounds like musical glass breaking in slow motion. If you are into artists such as Zomby then you should definitely check this guy out.

Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit - Secret Rhythms Live with video by Jeffers Egan
(Friday - Theater a/h Spui Main Hall : 00:30-01:30)

This is a collaboration between Nonplace founder Burnt Friedman and ex CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit. The concept of their 2002 album is ‘Secret Rhythms’. Their sound is laid back and hypnotic ranging from dub to exotic eastern inspired melodies.

Onra & Buddy Sativa
(Saturday - Paard van Troje Small Hall : 00:00-01:00)

Onra is a beat maker from Paris and released a fantastic album that is based around samples made from a crate-digging exploration of Vietnam. I have to admit I’ve not heard this latest album yet. If you like artists like Madlib you should like this guy. He performs live with Buddy Sativa from Soul Jazz records. This is a video of a solo performance from Onra at last years SONAR festival.

And this is a teaser from the latest album.

Nortec Collective presents Bostich + Fussible - Tijuana Sound Machine
(Saturday - Paard van Troje Main Hall : 03:00-05:00)
This is an eccentric mix of dub, Mexican music and techno that will be preformed live accompanied by 5 musicians.

There are many other great acts that we don’t have time to go into here (e.g. CONCRETE (Richie Hawtin), ATOM, 2562, Klimek). You can view our personal festival lineup on the TodaysArt web site here.

Weekend tickets are very good value and they just cost 28.50 euro on pre-sale or 35 euro on the door (note that some of the recommendations above are on the exclusive program that is not covered by a weekend pass). You can see all ticket buying options here.
